Physical Education at Cardinal Vaughan caters for all abilities in a very wide range of sports

Current Teacher

During their time at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School all pupils have the opportunity to participate in timetabled practical sessions that aim to develop physical and interpersonal skills through involvement in a variety of sporting activities.

Key Stage Three

Games afternoons take place once a week for all forms of entry. Games lessons are compulsory for forms 1-5 while sixth form pupils have the option of attending timetabled Games sessions. In order to provide pupils with a broad range of activities the School utilises various local facilities.

Games Lessons

Games lessons tend to employ a predominantly sport education approach which seeks to retain the best aspects of sports experiences and aims to provide pupils with an avenue to develop physical and social skills. During Games pupils have the opportunity to develop understanding, awareness and competency in the following activities: Rugby, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Cricket, Fitness and Weights, Athletics, Tennis, Rock Climbing, Squash, Table Tennis and Badminton. In addition pupils have the option of participating in various house competitions.

House Competitions

Upon entry in the first form pupils are allocated to one of four houses: More, Mayne, Fisher or Campion. House competitions are held throughout the year in a variety of sports and all pupils are encouraged to represent their house at various stages throughout their time at the School. The house system encourages pupils to interact positively with their peers within a competitive context; thus promoting fair play, co-operation, social interaction and the further development and application of physical skills. 

General Physical Education

Pupils in first and second form receive one additional hour of timetabled Physical Education per week. These lessons focus on skill development and also incorporate aspects relating to health and fitness. Some of the topics covered during Physical Education lessons include: Health Related Fitness, Basketball, Volleyball, Boxing Fitness, Gymnastics, Cricket and Athletics.

Key Stage Four

This specification follows on from the Key Stage 3 Physical Education programme of study by providing opportunities to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle through participation in a variety of physical contexts.

The content of this GCSE Physical Education specification is designed to enable students to enjoy and understand the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle; and to provide a route to Further Education awards, such as A’ levels and to Higher Education in P. E. as well as to providing related career opportunities.

Throughout the duration of the course pupils will have the opportunity to fulfil, and be assessed on, the following roles in a practical context: performer and/or leader/coach, or official.

GCSE Physical Education is a very demanding subject. It requires a broad theoretical outlook of Physical activity and Sport, as well as the ability to display competence in a range of practical activities across a number of differing roles.

Physical Education has links with careers in Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Coaching, Teaching, Nursing, Biology, the Armed Forces, the Police and many other related fields.

Facilities

In addition to the School gymnasium, outdoor court and the Twickenham playing fields, Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School is ideally situated to take full advantage of an excellent array of local facilities. 


These include the
Westway, Portobello Green Fitness Centre, Kensington Leisure Centre, Barn Elms Boathouse, Barn Elms Sports Facility, Linford Christie Stadium, Lords Cricket Ground, Richmond Athletic Rugby Ground and Wimbledon Lake.

Twickenham Playing Fields

The School’s Twickenham Playing Fields are used predominantly for Saturday morning fixtures and afternoon Games lessons. The facilities on offer include Cricket nets, a Cricket square, an all weather Athletics track to jumping pit, fitness suite, a permanent Football pitch, a permanent Rugby pitch and two dual usage fields (Rugby or Football depending on the season).

Extra-curricular Activities

Pupil’s timetabled practical sessions are further enhanced by the School’s extensive extracurricular program. Extracurricular sport at the School includes a range of competitive and participation based activities with the aim of providing something for every individual. In addition to Saturday morning fixtures for Rugby and Football the School’s competitive teams also compete midweek in various cup and borough competitions.

The School currently has competitive teams in the following sports: Rugby, Rugby 7's, Football, Cricket, Indoor Cricket, Cross Country Running, Athletics, Basketball, Indoor Rowing, Hockey, Netball, Badminton and Table Tennis. 
In addition to these teams pupils have the option of participating in the following activities: Rock Climbing, Squash, Rowing, Boxing Fitness, Fitness Circuits, Surfing, Mountain Walking, Kayaking, Yoga, and Sailing.
