The Vaughan runs an extensive and very successful extracurricular programme of team and individual sports.

Extracurricular sport at the School includes a range of competitive and participation based activities with the aim of providing something for every individual. In addition to Saturday morning fixtures for Rugby and Football the School’s competitive teams also compete midweek in various cup and borough competitions.

Twickenham Playing Fields

The School’s Twickenham Playing Fields are used predominantly for Saturday morning fixtures and afternoon Games lessons. The facilities on offer include Cricket nets, a Cricket square, an all weather Athletics track to jumping pit, fitness suite, a permanent Football pitch, a permanent Rugby pitch and two dual usage fields (Rugby or Football depending on the season).

Other Facilities

In addition to the School gymnasium, outdoor court and the Twickenham playing fields, Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School is ideally situated to take full advantage of an excellent array of local facilities. 


These include the
Westway, Portobello Green Fitness Centre, Kensington Leisure Centre, Barn Elms Boathouse, Barn Elms Sports Facility, Linford Christie Stadium, Lords Cricket Ground, Richmond Athletic Rugby Ground and Wimbledon Lake.

Rugby

The Rugby season commences in September with trials for all age groups. All rugby teams play Saturday morning fixtures for the duration of the Michaelmas term. In addition to Saturday morning fixtures all teams are involved in midweek and cup fixtures with the exception of the first year pupils.

Senior Rugby players also participate in Saturday morning and midweek fixtures during the Lent term. Rugby training for all teams takes place on Monday nights at Linford Christie Stadium. In addition to Rugby union the School also enters various Rugby Sevens tournaments. These generally take place during the Lent term.

Football

Football fixtures are played throughout the Michaelmas and Lent terms. However it is only the 1st and 2nd XI teams that play Saturday morning fixtures during the Michaelmas term.

In addition to Saturday morning fixtures the School’s football teams are also entered in various local and national cup competitions. Games for these competitions are played midweek

Basketball

The School’s Basketball programme continues to move from strength to strength under the expert direction of Coach Josh Cole. The School currently offers a range of opportunities for pupils to participate from basketball camps during the holidays to midweek training and competitions. Both the senior and junior teams are entered in borough and inter-borough competitions.

Rowing

Rowing at The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School continues to gain momentum. In addition to an after school Rowing club which takes place at Barn Elms Boathouse interested pupils also participate in training sessions that utilize our indoor rowing machines. In addition pupils have the opportunity to represent the School in the National Indoor Rowing Championships and various borough and London Youth Development run competitions.

Rock Climbing

During the Michaelmas and Lent terms pupils from the lower sixth can participate in Rock Climbing at the Westway Climbing Centre. The Friday sessions culminate in a two day outdoor climbing trip. During the Trinity term pupils from the third form have the option of attending Friday evening sessions which aim to build upon the curriculum Rock Climbing sessions that take place during curriculum lessons in the Michaelmas and Lent terms.

Cricket

During the Lent term the School’s various Cricket teams are involved in midweek cup and friendly fixtures with local schools. In addition to this first year pupils have the opportunity to participate in indoor coaching sessions at Lords. The School currently runs teams in the Under 19, Under 15, Under 14, Under 13 and the Under 12 age groups. There is also the opportunity for pupils to participate in Indoor Cricket. The Borough Indoor Cricket competition takes place during the Lent Term for members of the U12 and U13 Combined Team.

Badminton

A regular badminton club takes place in the School Gymnasium. In addition those pupils selected represent the School in Borough competitions.

Table Tennis

Pupils have the option of attending coaching sessions during after school hours. In addition selected pupils represent the School in Borough competitions.

Boxing Fitness

Boxing fitness incorporates the fundamental skills associated with boxing within a non-contact fitness oriented session. Second year pupils also have the opportunity to further develop and apply skills and knowledge acquired during second form curriculum Physical Education lessons.

Girls Sport

Girls sport is a welcome addition to the list of activities on offer at The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School. It offers an array of competitive and participation based sport for girls in the sixth form. School teams play regular competitive fixtures in sports such as Netball, Basketball, Football and Hockey.

Fitness Circuits

All pupils have the opportunity to participate in fitness circuits on Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes. These sessions cater for a range of fitness and ability levels.

Squash

A sixth form squash competition runs weekly at Portobello Green Fitness Centre during the Michaelmas and Lent terms. In addition to competitive games pupils can play socially during these times.
