Who we are
The Royal Borough Teaching School Alliance (RBTSA) was formed in August 2015 by three outstanding schools – Thomas Jones Primary School, Holland Park School and The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School. Since our inception we have grown rapidly and now work with a wide range of schools and other educational institutions nationwide supporting each other in a variety of ways. For example, the provision of ITT placements (School Direct Programmes), CPD programmes and School-to-School support.

Teachers and leaders at one or more of our lead schools host a number of visits or ‘open classrooms’ with a focus on a particular subject, key stage or aspect of school improvement. These sessions can be tailored to suit the requirements of those attending. Professional discussions and opportunities for reflection are integrated.

Teacher Training at the Vaughan
Our teacher training is conducted via the DfE School Direct programme and e-Qualitas. We also work closely with a variety of primary and secondary schools and universities across London.
The School Direct pathway into teaching offers you the opportunity of early hands on experience in the classroom and to be mentored by experienced teaching practitioners from the outset.
● A salaried or unsalaried (tuition fee) role where you train whilst teaching in a school.
● Trainees are assigned an experienced subject mentor who takes the lead in providing coaching and guidance; this includes a weekly meeting and ongoing professional training sessions. The School’s Professional Development Tutors will also assist in this process.
● Trainees would begin with a reduced teaching timetable which gradually builds throughout the one-year programme.
● This programme also includes extended placements in contrasting schools in order to give a greater depth and scope to the training programme.
School Direct (tuition fee) places are for applicants who will be students, and charged a tuition fee. Students may be able to obtain a student loan of up to £6,000, and may be eligible for a bursary.
Our commitment to your professional development
● Trainee teachers will be provided with a departmental mentor, professional development tutor as well as a tutor from eQualitas
● A weekly programme of training sessions designed specifically for trainee teachers delivered by outstanding practitioners. These training sessions would work through the professional standards on weekly basis.
● Trainee teachers will be provided with five days professional development at e-Qualitas.
● Enrolment on the whole School’s professional development INSET programme. This would include five days of designated continuing professional development each year.
● An opportunity to regularly observe experienced teachers in lessons across subject areas.
● Access to extensive online resources.
● A programme overseen by the Professional Development Tutors who will work closely with you and the mentors to ensure you receive the bespoke training and support you need.
● Opportunities to visit and train in other schools with whom we closely work.

Paid 4-Week Internship in Mathematics and Physics
We're working with the Agnus Dei Teaching School Alliance to run a four-week paid internship programme offering students the opportunity to be placed in a number for schools in West and North-East London
RBTSA Lead School: The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School - Addison Rd, Holland Park, W14 8BZ
(Start and end date: 25/06/18-20/07/18)
Agnus Dei Lead School: St Bonaventure’s School- Boleyn Rd, E7 9QD (Start and end date: 18/06/18-13/07/18)
Participants will be paid £300 a week for the 4-week programme, a total of £1200.
Opportunities will include:
- Observing and supporting lessons
- Preparing and teaching lesson components
- Providing support to individual pupils
- Running an enrichment club
- Supporting the wider life of the school including school trips
- Visiting other schools including a primary school
To take part you will require an A-Level in Mathematics (and Physics if you want to teach Physics) and will be in your penultimate year of an undergraduate degree course in Mathematics, Physics, engineering or a related subject.

NQT Support & Services
NQT Appropriate Body – Services and Accreditation
The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial Teaching School has been approved as an Appropriate Body. This means that it can help support and accredit the NQT induction process for teachers starting on their induction year at a cost of £150 per candidate. NQT Support Programme for Secondary Schools
The support programme consists of ten sessions delivered over the year across three Teaching Schools Alliances: St Marylebone, West London Teaching School Alliance (WLTSA) and the RBTSA. The programme is designed to build upon and enhance the induction programme undertaken in the NQT’s school. During the coming year 2017-2018, the programme will again take place on a range of evenings from September to July. Candidates this year have graded the wide range of sessions from voice coaching to creativity in the classroom as outstanding. As part of the programme participants will also have the opportunity to visit other schools to help support their learning. The programme costs £150.

Teacher Subject Specialist Training
The Cardinal Vaughan School, part of the Royal Borough Teaching Alliance (www.rbtsa.co.uk), in conjunction with St Mary’s University, Twickenham is offering specialist subject training. The courses are designed for non- specialist teachers considering teaching French, Spanish, Mathematics and Physics or those non-specialist currently teaching these subjects or those returning to work. Teachers will have the opportunity to develop their subject knowledge, pedagogy and become more confident and prepared classroom practitioners.
Each course will provide:
- A STRUCTURED SERIES OF FOUR 2-HOUR FACE-TO-FACE TWILIGHT SESSIONS COVERING SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE AND PEDAGOGY IN KEY AREAS OF THE SUBJECT.
- LESSON OBSERVATIONS AND DETAILED FEEDBACK FROM AN EXPERIENCED PRACTITIONER.
- ALLOCATION OF AN EXPERT SPECIALIST MENTOR.
- FOCUSED INDEPENDENT LEARNING TASKS ON KEY AREAS OF SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE AND PEDAGOGY.
- OBSERVING SUBJECT LESSONS BY EXPERIENCED TEACHERS.
- RESOURCES AND KEY MATERIALS.
- SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE IS WORTH 30 MASTER’S LEVEL CREDITS (ACCREDITATION AND CERTIFICATION WILL BE UNDERTAKEN BY ST MARY’S UNIVERSITY.)
- A PROGRAMME OF STUDY DEVISED BY AN OUTSTANDING UNIVERSITY TEACHER TRAINING PROVIDER AND AN OUTSTANDING ACADEMY SCHOOL WITH A WEALTH EXPERTISE IN TEACHING TRAINING, PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT.
Mathematics and Physics
Teacher subject specialism training in mathematics and physics was launched in 2015 to 2016 and aims to build the capacity of non-specialists who may be able to move into a mathematics or physics role. In addition, it aims to upskill non-specialists who are currently teaching mathematics or physics and those looking to return to the profession.
Modern Foreign Languages
Teacher subject specialism training in secondary modern foreign languages (MFL) was launched in 2016 to 2017 to build additional capacity to provide the English Baccalaureate (EBacc). In addition to non-specialists and returning teachers, this programme is available to specialist MFL teachers who are not currently teaching MFL but who need refresher training, to enable a move back to an MFL role. This training could also be of benefit to teachers who may be able to teach a second language in addition to their specialist subject.
This training is free of charge for participants.
For secondary mathematics and physics, eligible participants include:
- NON-SPECIALIST TEACHERS WHO COULD POTENTIALLY TEACH SECONDARY MATHEMATICS OR PHYSICS IN ADDITION TO, OR AS THEIR MAIN SUBJECT
- NON-SPECIALIST TEACHERS WHO ARE CURRENTLY TEACHING MATHEMATICS OR PHYSICS (EITHER FULL-TIME OR IN ADDITION TO THE SPECIALIST SUBJECT)
- TEACHERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO RETURN TO THE PROFESSION

- NON-SPECIALIST TEACHERS CURRENTLY TEACHING MFL IN ADDITION TO THEIR SPECIALIST SUBJECT
- SPECIALIST MFL TEACHERS WHO ARE NOT CURRENTLY TEACHING MFL AND WHO NEED REFRESHER TRAINING TO ENABLE A MOVE BACK TO AN MFL ROLE
- SPECIALIST MFL TEACHERS WHO HAVE THE CAPACITY TO TEACH A NEW LANGUAGE IN ADDITION TO THEIR LANGUAGE SPECIALISM
- TEACHERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO RETURN TO THE PROFESSION
- OVERSEAS TRAINED TEACHERS
Other eligibility criteria
- NEWLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS (NQTS) ARE ELIGIBLE.
- PRIMARY TEACHERS ARE ONLY ELIGIBLE IF THEY WILL BE TEACHING YEAR 7/8 PUPILS AS PART OF CROSS-SCHOOL KEY STAGE 2/3 COLLABORATION (FOR EXAMPLE IN A MULTI-ACADEMY TRUST (MAT)) OR IF THEY HAVE FIRM PLANS TO CONVERT FROM PRIMARY TO A SECONDARY TEACHING POST.
- PARTICIPANTS WHO ARE MEMBERS OF AND HAVE BEEN AWARDED QUALIFIED TEACHER LEARNING AND SKILLS STATUS (QTLS) BY THE SOCIETY FOR EDUCATION ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAMME IF THEY HAVE FIRM PLANS TO TEACH A TEACHER SUBJECT SPECIALISM TRAINING SUBJECT IN A SECONDARY SCHOOL OR SIXTH-FORM COLLEGE.
- SUPPLY TEACHERS AND PERIPATETIC TEACHERS ARE ELIGIBLE ONLY IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A CONTRACT WITH A SCHOOL AND ARE COMMITTED TO RETURNING TO A PERMANENT POST IN A SECONDARY SCHOOL OR SIXTH-FORM COLLEGE.
- TEACHERS WITHOUT QUALIFIED TEACHER STATUS (QTS) WORKING IN ACADEMIES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAMME.
- PARTICIPANTS MAY UNDERTAKE A SECOND TEACHER SUBJECT SPECIALISM TRAINING PROGRAMME ONLY WHERE THEY CAN SHOW THAT IT WILL LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN THEIR TEACHING HOURS IN THAT SUBJECT. THIS WILL BE BY EXCEPTION AND NCTL WILL CONSIDER THIS ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS.
- OVERSEAS TRAINED TEACHERS SHOULD BE RESIDENT AND ELIGIBLE TO WORK IN THE UK, AND ACTIVELY SEEKING A POST IN SECONDARY SCHOOL OR SIXTH-FORM COLLEGE.

- INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING (ITT) TRAINEES
- HIGHER LEVEL TEACHING ASSISTANTS (HLTAS)
- TEACHING ASSISTANTS (TAS) AND OTHER SUPPORT STAFF

Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course (Computing/Computer Science)
What is a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course?
- A Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course is designed to support those completing their initial teacher training in their chosen subject. The contents should provide trainees with a developed knowledge and understanding in preparation for teaching and delivery of the curriculum.
Who completes an SKE?
- Prospective teachers who have already secured a place with a Teacher Training organisation (Schools Direct or SCITT) but the place is conditional based on improving Computer Science subject knowledge.
- Prospective teachers who have been working in industry but have not used school based programming languages.
- Prospective teachers who have a Computer Science degree that needs updating or needs supplementing to be able to teach at GCSE and A-Level
- Prospective teachers who have an IT- related degree and require an introductory programming course.
How long is the course and what does it involve?
- The course runs over 8 weeks through online activities, weekly 2 hour taught sessions, and a once a week e-tutor session.
- Activities will include a reflective log to support progress and best practice, formative assessment tasks and activities and the development of programming project.
What will be covered from week to week?
- Week 1: Algorithms, Abstraction and Decomposition
- Week 2: Sequencing, Selection and Iteration
- Week 3: Arrays and FOR loops
- Week 4: Subroutines, local and global variables
- Week 5: Data Representation
- Week 6: Computer system architecture, hardware and software
- Week 7: Logic gates and boolean algebra
- Week 8: How to approach a non-examined assessment

- The school’s Computing Science department has some of the best results in the country, last year 54.5% of the pupils taking the subject at GCSE achieved an A* compared to the national average of 6.3%
- All course teachers are qualified, practicing teachers with undergraduate degrees or higher in Computer Science or related subjects.

Leaders of Education
National Leaders of Education
The Headteachers of the lead schools of The Royal Borough Teaching School Alliance are each National Leaders of Education and each school has a team of highly skilled and experienced outstanding practitioners to contribute significantly to improving the outcomes for students through developing the capacity of peer leaders in other schools. Typically, NLEs will work with the Headteacher and SLEs will work with middle and/or senior leaders to:
• Carry out diagnostic visits.
• Develop action plans, identifying key priorities.
• Provide one-to-one or group support.
• Offer coaching and mentoring support.
• Provide access to resources and training.
The ultimate aim of NLEs and SLEs will always be to support the improvements of the outcomes for students through developing the capacity of leaders in other schools.
Specialist Leaders of Education
The RBTSA currently has three Specialist Leaders of Education in Art, Science and Computer Science. These colleagues are outstanding practitioners in their own right and have been trained to help support the development of teaching and learning across these subject areas in other schools.
A large part of the work of the teaching school alliance is to provide support to other schools. Whilst we recognise the importance of systems and processes in school improvement, we do not simply offer a one-size-fits-all approach. We wish to support schools in establishing deep rooted and sustainable improvements through a bespoke programme of support. This can be delivered in a variety of ways, for example, working within departments to develop teaching and learning or working with partner schools on whole school strategies or reviewing leadership and management issues.
