Lower Sixth Pupil Attends Arkwright Engineering Scholarship Event at Bletchley Park

Published Friday 6 December 2024

This year, Soki F, Lower Sixth was awarded the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship, designed to inspire students to become outstanding engineers of the future. From a field of 1500 applicants, it is an amazing accomplishment to be selected.

Soki recently attended the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship Event at Bletchley Park, where he was able to network with real-world engineering organisations.

Soki commented: "My experience with the Arkwright scholarship is really great, it has opened up many doors for me and has given me a great insight into the fields I am hoping to work in. The recent event that I attended, organised by the Arkwright, gave me opportunities to network, hear inspiring talks and share ideas with a variety of engineers who think alike. On top of the vast selection of events and experiences we can have, I am given funding from my sponsor GHD Engineering. This funding is for my side projects and items that will help me in the long term and advance my experience in engineering.

Although the process of application, tests and interviews was new and quite scary at first, the whole process has given me experience in learning how to apply, how to think outside the box and how to sell yourself in an interview. The scholarship really allows you to become yourself and project that to the highest quality, by giving us experience and ideas into what we should do now and what we wish to do later in our years.

Now that I have the scholarship I am planning to attend more of these events and opportunities to network and meet new people. On top of this, I am currently planning to start new ambitious side projects which can help me gain experience in working with materials, but also make me think further and deeper in detail. The DT and Engineering Department at Cardinal Vaughan and Ms Hellier have been supporting me for many years and allowed me to take on new ideas and projects, such as The Cardinals Greenpower racing team. Without the great amount of warm support in the subject I love, I would not have been able to take on this new opportunity.

The Arkwright scholarship is a great way to further progress your passion in engineering and also push you out of your comfort zone and experience both success and failures that we can learn from. Meeting new people and hearing talks from people with experience in multiple professions really inspires you to find what you really want to do. It is definitely an opportunity I would recommend to any younger aspiring engineer."

We are incredibly proud of the hard work and determination that Soki has shown and look forward to sharing more updates throughout his scholarship.
