Classical Reading Competition

Published Monday 10 March 2025

On Wednesday 5 March, Third Form pupils Noah G and Xavier H-P represented the school at a Classical Reading Competition hosted at Westminster School. They were competing in the Beginner Greek category and worked as a pair reading an excerpt from book 10 of Homer's The Odyssey in the original ancient Greek.

The beginner Greek category was the most hotly contested category, with nine schools competing. Noah, reading as the Greek hero Odysseus, and Xavier, reading as the sorceress Circe, produced an excellent and impassioned reading that really breathed life into the ancient Greek poetry. Mr Scott, Teacher of Classics, commented that "Homer would have been proud!"

Any boy currently studying Latin in Second Form will be eligible to sign up for Classical Greek GCSE as an extra subject next year. If you would like to find out more about this, please come and speak to the Classics department at the Second Form Options Evening next Tuesday, 1 April.
