Lower Sixth Volunteer with HCPT in Lourdes Pilgrimage

Four Cardinal Vaughan Sixth Form pupils, Claudia, Andrea, Yanush, and Bill, recently returned from a truly memorable experience as volunteers on a pilgrimage to Lourdes with HCPT Group 32. Their journey was filled with joy, compassion, and deep personal growth as they supported young pilgrims with additional needs throughout a week packed with activity, reflection, and time as a community.
HCPT (Hosanna House and Children’s Pilgrimage Trust) is a UK-based charity that takes children and young people with additional needs on life-changing pilgrimages to Lourdes each Easter. Run largely by volunteers, the trips offer fun, friendship, and spiritual nourishment in a uniquely supportive environment.
Under the theme “Angels Among Us,” the pupils certainly lived up to the name. Described by the group leader as “watchful, caring, attentive, thoughtful, and respectful,” they were praised for their wholehearted engagement and dedication to the group. Whether joining in games, dancing and singing, or offering support wherever needed, they brought smiles and happiness to everyone they encountered.
The week’s itinerary was rich with meaningful moments. The group celebrated Mass in a variety of locations, from a hotel lounge to a chapel in Lourdes, and even on a mountainside in Gavarnie. The students also took part in the famous Lourdes Torchlight Procession, a moving experience amidst thousands of international pilgrims.
The highlight for many was the Candle Ceremony, a time of reflection and prayer, where the group remembered those who had supported them on their journey, including members of the Vaughan Community.
This trip was a chance for our pupils to grow, serve, and witness the power of kindness and community. A heartfelt thank you to HCPT Group 32 for welcoming them so warmly and to Mr Kelleher, Assistant Head, and Ms Bell, Community Service Co-ordinator, for organising.
