Sixth Form Pupil Takes on World Champion in World Taekwondo Championship

Published Tuesday 1 October 2024

Last weekend, Stephen M T, Upper Sixth, competed in a World Taekwondo Championship held at the K2 Sports Centre in Crawley.

On the first day of the competition, Stephen performed two black patterns; 1st Dan and 2nd Dan black belt pattern, winning a bronze medal in a very tough group.

On the second day, Stephen fought at the elite level, which was full contact with head shots. In the first round, he faced the current world champion. He fought very well and delivered a flying spin kick which senior 9th Dan instructors said was 'the kick of the tournament'. Although Stephen didn’t win, the experience will last him for a long time.

Mr Regan, Teacher of PE and Head of Upper Sixth, commented: "What a wonderful achievement for Stephen and Mr Trento, his coach and father. Just to compete at the World Championships, let alone winning a bronze in the Pattern section, and having the opportunity to fight the current World Champion, is a fantastic experience."

Congratulations, Stephen and Mr Trento!
