Founded in 1994, the Vaughan Centre for Young Musicians (VCYM) has given hundreds of primary school-aged boys an exceptional introduction to music-making, inspiring a lifelong love of music while developing confidence and creativity.
Held from 4.30pm–6.30pm on ten Mondays each term, VCYM offers boys aged 8–11 the opportunity to extend their musical education through specialist tuition and ensemble performance in a fun and supportive environment.
What does VCYM offer?
Each boy attending VCYM receives one instrumental lesson per session, either individually or in a small pair/group for beginners on certain instruments. Lessons last between 20 and 30 minutes. Instruments currently offered include:
- Piano
- Violin
- Viola
- Cello
- Double Bass
- Flute
- Oboe
- Clarinet
- Saxophone
- Trumpet
- French Horn

Instruments are provided for boys to use while learning.
The remainder of the session is spent enjoying a varied and engaging programme of musicianship activities, including:
- Orchestra
- Choir
- Music technology
- Aural and rhythmic training
- Composition lessons
At the end of each term, boys take part in an informal concert where they have the opportunity to perform and celebrate their progress. Written reports are also provided twice yearly, at Christmas and in the Summer Term.
