Overview of the School (on 6 February 2018)  

Total number of pupils on roll: 960

Total number of pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium: 141 from the First to Fifth Forms 

Pupil Premium grant received per pupil per year: £935 

Nature of Support 

Support is tailored to the individual needs of the pupil. Pupils have accessed: 

  • One-to-one and small group learning mentor support 
  • Personal tuition in numeracy and literacy 
  • Small group supported study to aid learning in a variety of subject areas 
  • Study skills sessions 
  • Small group reading, spelling and numeracy support 
  • Personalised curriculum choices 
  • Homework club after school (Monday to Thursday) 
  • Financial support for equipment, residential trips and music tuition 
  • Smaller class sizes at Key Stage 3 with class sizes limited to 15 for those needing most support and also in specialised subjects throughout all Key Stages. 
  • An extensive programme of pre-examination revision classes during the Easter holidays 
  • A wide range of booster classes at Key Stage 4 targeted at those at risk of under-performance 
  • Access to School Counsellor services 
  • Extended Form Periods for Form Teachers to help pupils access the above strategies and provide one-to-one support

Measuring the Impact of Pupil Premium Spending

  • Measures the impact of the interventions by tracking the progress of Pupil Premium pupils on a termly basis 
  • Measures the success of pupils attainment and progress at the end of Key Stage 4 against threshold measures such as 5+ A*-C, 5+ A*-C including English and Mathematics, EBacc and progress in English, Mathematics and Science.
  • Monitors and supports pupils accessing pastoral support and discusses their progress and needs regularly 

87% (2016 - 92% ; 2015 - 90%) of all pupils received five or more grades at A* to C (or equivalent); for those in receipt of the pupil premium, this figure was 76% (2016 – 77%; 2015- 83%).  

83% (2016 – 77%; 2015 – 74%) of pupils in receipt of Pupil Premium achieved at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C (4+ under new 9-1 grade system) including Mathematics and English; this is 4% (2016 – 10%; 2015 – 9%) below the total for all pupils, but far exceeds the national average for all Pupil Premium boys and that for all boys nationally.  

The Progress 8 score for all pupils was 0.28 (2016 - 0.43); for those in receipt of the pupil premium, this figure was 0.28 (2016 - 0.28) again, above national averages for that group.
